Fan, or fan?

While wondering why anime no longer held the same magic it used to,
the HTML Swiss Army Knife recently came to a
conclusion: it wasn't anime he was growing tired of, it was anime
fandom.
24-hour marathons aside, this HTML slicing
utensil sees nothing wrong with enjoying a decent show. But much of fandom
these days consists of evangelists and revolutionaries running around elevating
their favorite show to worship status, spending twice as much time in
front of a computer instead of a TV, exchanging
insults, flaming others, and generally stoking their egos.
Anyone remember that William Shatner quote from
SNL?
The HTML Knife realizes that the same group
of people would much rather kneejerk and flame than to take a critical look
at their own lives, and that his criticism is probably falling on deaf ears.
Now where was that asbestos underwear...
Kaching!

Few videogames manage to go platinum. Even fewer manage the feat before
they even go on sale. The much-anticipated FINAL FANTASY
VIII did exactly that, reaching a whopping 1 million in preorders
in Japan's DigiCube outlets before its sale date of February 11th in Japan.
Import Gamers 2, Sony 0

And while we're on the topic, Square's new title will use Sony's new
anti-modchip protection to thwart piracy as well as prevent players in
other regions from playing Japanese titles. Unfortunately for Sony, the
modchip folks have already devised a way to defeat Sony's new protection
scheme.
It may not take long before a
frustrated Sony decides to encase the PlayStation motherboard in epoxy to
prevent tampering with the circuitry. In the meantime, modchip businesses
may take joy in the fact that a lot of gamers will be lining up to update
their modchips in short order...
Next Issue...

It was mankind's last best hope for peace. Well not exactly, but
EX will be at Katsucon Five. With guests of
Honor Haruhiko Mikimoto and Hiroki Hayashi, it should be an interesting time.
We'll see all there is to see and make sure that you do too. So don't miss the
next issue of
EX!

are solely those of the HTML Swiss Army Knife, and do not
represent the views of EX. Any criticisms regarding his
views should be sent here.
