Fan, or fan?

While wondering why anime no longer held the same magic it used to, the HTML Swiss Army Knife recently came to a conclusion: it wasn't anime he was growing tired of, it was anime fandom.
  24-hour marathons aside, this HTML slicing utensil sees nothing wrong with enjoying a decent show. But much of fandom these days consists of evangelists and revolutionaries running around elevating their favorite show to worship status, spending twice as much time in front of a computer instead of a TV, exchanging insults, flaming others, and generally stoking their egos.
  Anyone remember that William Shatner quote from SNL?
  The HTML Knife realizes that the same group of people would much rather kneejerk and flame than to take a critical look at their own lives, and that his criticism is probably falling on deaf ears. Now where was that asbestos underwear...

Kaching!

Few videogames manage to go platinum. Even fewer manage the feat before they even go on sale. The much-anticipated FINAL FANTASY VIII did exactly that, reaching a whopping 1 million in preorders in Japan's DigiCube outlets before its sale date of February 11th in Japan.

Import Gamers 2, Sony 0

And while we're on the topic, Square's new title will use Sony's new anti-modchip protection to thwart piracy as well as prevent players in other regions from playing Japanese titles. Unfortunately for Sony, the modchip folks have already devised a way to defeat Sony's new protection scheme.
  It may not take long before a frustrated Sony decides to encase the PlayStation motherboard in epoxy to prevent tampering with the circuitry. In the meantime, modchip businesses may take joy in the fact that a lot of gamers will be lining up to update their modchips in short order...
